Unbelievable! Skenes’ Unique Rookie Card Sells for a Record-Breaking $1.11 Million

Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Paul Skenes has made waves in the sports card world. His 2024 Topps Chrome Update MLB debut patch autograph card recently sold for a staggering $1.11 million. This sale set a new record for any Skenes card, surpassing previous high prices for modern baseball cards that weren’t associated with the legendary Mike Trout. In fact, Trout’s 1-of-1 rookie card went for $3.9 million back in August 2020, making it the most expensive sports card ever at that time.

The identity of the buyer is still a mystery, but the card was sold through Fanatics Collect. What makes this card so special? It’s a 1-of-1, meaning it’s the only one of its kind. It features an autograph from Skenes along with a patch from his Pirates jersey worn during his MLB debut. This type of collectible was introduced by Topps for the 2023 season and has already captured significant attention.

Before this, the highest price for a Skenes card was $150,000, achieved in a private sale for fellow player Anthony Volpe. Another notable sale included Jackson Holiday’s MLB debut patch autograph card, which fetched $198,000 recently.

Skenes’ popularity has soared as he was named the National League’s starting pitcher for the All-Star Game and was also a finalist for the Cy Young Award and Rookie of the Year in 2024. This kind of allure has sparked remarkable interest in his trading cards. In a unique twist, last Christmas, an 11-year-old Dodgers fan in Los Angeles found the Skenes redemption card in a single box of cards he received.

When the news broke, the Pirates offered a lavish bounty to get the card back, including 30 years’ worth of season tickets and a meet-and-greet with Skenes. Even Livvy Dunne, Skenes’ girlfriend and a collegiate gymnast, offered to host the family for a game in her suite. However, the family opted to sell rather than trade or keep the card. They engaged with auction houses and decided on Fanatics Collect, where the process involved Kevin Lenane, Vice President of Fanatics’ Marketplace, flying to Texas to retrieve the card for them.

Lenane reflected on the process, saying it felt like “bringing a check” to an excited family. The card was so valuable that even the airplane pilot wanted a picture with it!

The attention around the Skenes card has been intense. Bell, CEO of Fanatics Collect, noted that he had never seen so much excitement over a card before, stating that he received more inquiries about this card than any other in history. The viewing of the card at Fanatics’ Super Bowl LIX party even drew comparisons to the Mona Lisa, with crowds forming to get a glimpse.

Regarding the financial aspect, the family plans to use a significant portion of the sale to contribute to college savings for the young boy and his brother. Lenane mentioned that while they plan to set aside a bit for more card collecting, the prime focus is on education.

In June 2023, a survey from the Professional Sports Authenticator revealed that collectibles like trading cards have surged in popularity, particularly among younger audiences. This reflects a broader trend where nostalgia and community build a captivating environment around such items.
