Unbelievable Weather Alert: 8 Tornadoes Hit Saskatchewan in Just One Day!

Last Thursday, Saskatchewan experienced wild weather that brought eight confirmed tornadoes, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC). Meteorologist Crawford Luke noted, “Having eight in one day is quite a substantial event and certainly memorable.”

With these eight tornadoes, the total for the year in Saskatchewan now stands at 12. Typically, the province sees about 15 tornadoes in an entire summer, making it the second most tornado-prone area in Canada. “Saskatchewan is no stranger to tornadoes,” Luke added.

The storms were fueled by supercell thunderstorms, leading to numerous emergency alerts for southern Saskatchewan late in the afternoon. Residents were advised to take cover as severe weather unfolded.

The ECCC partnered with the Northern Tornadoes Project from Western University in Ontario to verify these tornadoes using videos and photos. Luke explained that they spent several days analyzing footage to ensure accuracy. Some property damage was reported near Hubbard, but thankfully, no injuries occurred.

Interestingly, recent statistics indicate that tornado activity in Canada has been on the rise. A study from the University of Alberta showed a 73% increase in tornado occurrences over the last two decades. This highlights the changing weather patterns we are experiencing.

The increase in tornadoes can sometimes stir discussions on climate change. Experts suggest that warming temperatures may lead to more severe weather events, including tornadoes. Social media has also buzzed with reactions from people in Saskatchewan, sharing their experiences and videos of the tornados. One video showing a tornado near Balgonie gained considerable attention, capturing the community’s concern and amazement.

ECCC continues to investigate weather phenomena, including a recent funnel cloud event to determine if any tornadoes formed.
