UNC Basketball: Hubert Davis Secures Contract Extension Through 2030 – What This Means for the Program’s Future

North Carolina has extended men’s basketball coach Hubert Davis’s contract, keeping him with the program until the end of the 2029-2030 season.

The contract was officially signed on December 4, 2023, even though it was initially agreed upon in July. This was the same day that UNC faced a tough loss to Alabama at home.

Under the new deal, Davis’s base salary will increase significantly, going from $400,000 to $1.25 million per year. Additionally, his supplemental income for this season is set at $1.7 million, with an annual $100,000 bump each year throughout the contract.

If North Carolina decides to part ways with Davis before the contract ends, the buyout will only involve his base salary multiplied by the remaining years—no additional cost for supplemental income.

This extension is a reward for Davis’s impressive performance during the 2023-24 season, where he led the team to its first ACC regular-season title in five years and a top seed in the NCAA Tournament. His efforts earned him the title of ACC Coach of the Year.

Since taking over for Hall of Famer Roy Williams in April 2021, Davis has received two contract extensions. His first came after a successful debut season, where he led the Tar Heels to the Final Four and almost won the national championship. However, the next season brought challenges when the team, expected to perform well, did not qualify for the NCAA Tournament.

As of now, UNC holds an 18-11 record and is on the NCAA Tournament bubble. They are currently projected to be “First Four Out” in brackets, meaning they are right on the edge of making the tournament.

In related news, UNC has recently brought in NBA agent Jim Tanner as its first executive director and general manager, aiming to strengthen the program further.

Davis has a solid overall record of 96-42 and a noteworthy conference record of 54-23 since he started as head coach.
