CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The North Carolina fencing team is gearing up for the NCAA regional championships on Saturday, March 8, in Madison, N.J. They will face off against strong teams, including Princeton, Johns Hopkins, and Duke in the Mid-Atlantic/South Regional.
In the last regional competition, Sophia Kovacs shone bright, finishing second in saber. On the foil side, Sophia Mandour secured ninth place. For the men, Elden Wood finished fifth in saber. Their recent performance at the ACC Championship was impressive, with the men’s team taking second place and Eli Lippman winning the individual championship for men’s epee.
Here’s who made the cut to compete this year:
- Men’s Foil: Nick Baumstein, Cristian Porras, Peter Bruk, Alexander Sichitiu, and Brayden Gyure
- Women’s Foil: Katie McGillion-Moore, Lauren Yu, Molly Kettelle, and Zhiyan Qian
- Men’s Epee: Aiden Click, Eli Lippman, Maximo Zafft
- Women’s Epee: Anna Temiryaev, Tatiana Zafft, Mariasole Capellua, Mia Smotritsky, Nicole Milewski
- Men’s Sabre: Nicky Wind, Casper Mika, Finn Buchmann
- Women’s Sabre: Sophia Kovacs, Gabriella Alfarache, Ella Webb
