A mandatory 20% tip was automatically included, which left us both stunned.

Feeling cheated is frustrating. It reminds me of Johnny Rotten’s famous quote, “Ever get the feeling you’ve been cheated?” I felt that way now. Meg and I were both taken aback by the bill and decided then and there: we wouldn’t come back.

It’s interesting how dining out has evolved. According to a recent survey by the National Restaurant Association, 81% of consumers have faced unexpected charges at restaurants in the past year. It seems more and more places are adopting these sneaky upselling tactics.

Renowned food critic Ruth Reichl notes that the dining experience is not just about food; it’s about feeling valued. When restaurants focus more on squeezing extra dollars out of customers, it diminishes the joy of eating out. People want good food, yes, but they also want fair prices and clear communication.

So, while my burger was delicious, the frustration over the unexpected costs overshadowed the meal. It’s amazing how such small things can impact an experience. We should be able to enjoy our food and leave with a smile, not with a sense of being taken advantage of.
