LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – This week we have a mixed bag of news regarding local food establishments. While some places shined, a couple fell short on health standards, racking up nearly 60 violations combined.
Cafe J at 2605 19th Street had a total of 39 violations. Here are some of the main concerns:
- Ready-to-eat chicken wasn’t kept cold enough, exceeding the safe limit of 41°F.
- Several ready-to-eat items lacked proper date markings, including cut onions and marinara sauce.
- Cream was found to have an unpleasant odor and texture.
- Many utensils were dirty or damaged, and some were stored improperly.
- Soda nozzles had a concerning black residue, and ice machines showed signs of neglect.
These findings raise serious questions about food safety at Cafe J. As Dr. Lisa Brown, a food safety expert, explains, “Neglecting basic cleanliness can lead to serious health risks.” It’s crucial for establishments to prioritize health regulations.
Jack N Jill Donuts at 9810 Slide had 17 violations. Some key issues were:
- Raw eggs above the safe cold temperature of 41°F.
- Cooked items, like kolaches and sliced ham, didn’t have appropriate temperature controls.
- An employee didn’t wash their hands after cleaning a table before returning to food prep.
- There were no soap supplies at hand sinks, which is a basic necessity.
The inspector noted that the food safety knowledge among staff seemed lacking. According to a recent survey by the Food and Drug Administration, only 15% of food service workers demonstrate adequate food safety practices. This highlights a larger issue in the industry.
Despite the number of violations, many were quickly rectified during the inspections.
On a brighter note, we also have highlights of this week’s Top Performers:
- Daiquiris To Go at 1803 7th
- Lit Brews at 3501 50th
- Raising Cane’s at 5203 57th
- River Smith’s Catering at 406 Avenue Q
- Chicken Salad Chick at 5015 Milwaukee
- On the Hook Fish and Chips at 5002 W. Loop 289
These establishments set an example for food safety and cleanliness. It’s essential to recognize those who are committed to maintaining high standards in food service. Keeping food safe is not just about regulations; it’s about trust in our local community.
