New Delhi: Indian stocks saw a strong performance in April, with smaller companies leading the way. A report from OmniScience Capital highlighted that the Nifty Smallcap 250 index rose by 13.4%, while the Nifty Microcap 250 jumped by 16.2%.
This growth came even amid concerns like the US-Iran conflict, rising oil prices, and inflation. The report mentioned its “Bharat Vectors” framework, analyzing around 1,500 investable companies, which indicated that smaller, lower market-cap companies outperformed their larger counterparts.
Specifically, 250 stocks with an average market cap of 1,500 crore recorded a return of 25.2%, and another set of 250 stocks with a cap of around 3,000 crore gained 23.2%. This shows that, despite geopolitical tensions and foreign investor sell-offs, Indian equities maintained strong returns.
Dr. Vikas Gupta, CEO and Chief Investment Strategist, pointed out that market dynamics can be misleading. He compared the market to a magician, suggesting that while macro concerns grab attention, real growth comes from solid fundamentals and proper pricing. He emphasized that returns were not due to a sudden improvement in the businesses themselves but rather a re-evaluation of their values.
Ashwini Shami, President and Chief Portfolio Manager, added that the current market looks investable as long as investors concentrate on companies with low debt, high returns on equity, solid growth potential, and appealing valuations.
Foreign institutional investors, however, continued to sell off, with total outflows reaching approximately Rs 1.75 lakh crore for the year, including around Rs 44,000 crore just in April.
This scenario offers both risks and opportunities. Many experts believe that by focusing on fundamentals, investors can navigate these volatile waters successfully. In a recent survey, 70% of financial experts expressed optimism about small-cap stocks as a long-term investment, indicating a shift in market confidence.
