Despite a lot of promotion, “Jewel Thief” felt predictable. The story revolves around a precious diamond called the Red Sun, worth ₹500 crores. Rihan Roy, played by Saif Ali Khan, is the thief, and Rajan, played by Jaideep Ahlawat, orchestrates the plot. Kunal Kapoor features as the police officer on their trail, a role he returns to after a long break.

Heist films are nothing new. The classic “Jewel Thief” from 1967, starring Dev Anand, remains a landmark in this genre. It seems this recent version was an attempt to cash in on nostalgia, but it doesn’t bring anything fresh to the table.

The script lacks depth, making the storyline feel basic. Character development is almost non-existent; the film dives straight into the heist preparations without much context. This lack of connection between the characters leaves viewers feeling detached.

Even with big names like Saif Ali Khan, the execution feels underwhelming. He delivers a dedicated performance, but one can’t help but wonder if he read the script before signing on. Jaideep Ahlawat shines as the mafia boss, showcasing a commanding presence. However, Kunal Kapoor’s performance falters, with poor dialogue delivery and lackluster expressions. Nikita Dutta, while visually appealing, is relegated to a minor role with minimal dialogue.

Interestingly, a recent study found that audiences often favor character-driven stories over predictable plots. This trend suggests that “Jewel Thief” may not resonate well with viewers seeking substance in their entertainment.

The film lacks humor, which could have offered a breather amidst the tension of a heist story. The music feels flat, failing to evoke the dramatic emotions typically expected in this genre.

While “Jewel Thief” could entertain those with a penchant for heist narratives, it’s worth noting that it’s light on substance. With no adult scenes, it’s family-friendly, featuring only a few mild swears.

For those looking for something new, you might want to skip this one.
