A lawyer representing the parents of Brian Laundrie recently expressed concerns about Netflix’s new documentary series regarding the tragic case involving Brian and his fiancée Gabby Petito. The attorney, Steven P. Bertolino, claimed the series contains many inaccuracies and misrepresentations of the timeline of events.

Bertolino acknowledged the facts surrounding the case, stating, “We all know Brian took Gabby’s life and then took his own.” He urged for both families to be allowed to grieve in peace.

The Laundrie family chose not to participate in the making of American Murder: Gabby Petito, which aims to provide a deeper understanding of the couple’s relationship during the final days of Gabby’s life. Gabby went missing in September 2021 while on a road trip with Laundrie. Concerns grew when she stopped communicating with her family. Eventually, Laundrie returned to Florida alone, raising further suspicions.

Gabby’s body was discovered on September 19, 2021, in Wyoming. A month later, Laundrie’s remains were found in Florida, along with a note in which he took responsibility for her death.

The case gained significant media attention, especially after a YouTube video of Gabby went viral, accumulating millions of views following her disappearance. The documentary features various media, including text messages, journal entries, and police footage to paint a fuller picture of their relationship. Directors Julia Willoughby Nason and Michael Gasparro hope to help viewers understand the complexities of Gabby’s circumstances.

During the production, Gabby’s family cooperated extensively, sharing her personal materials to contribute to the documentary’s narrative. They even allowed the film crew to accompany them to the site where Gabby’s body was found, reinforcing their commitment to honoring her memory.

The series highlights troubling interactions between Gabby and Brian, even including insights from Gabby’s ex-boyfriend, who noted that during their communication in the months leading up to Gabby’s death, she hinted at wanting to leave Brian. The last time anyone heard from her was on August 27, 2021.

While Petito’s family participated openly, the Laundrie family declined all requests for interviews. Laundrie’s sister, Cassie, disputed claims made during the documentary about her conversations with law enforcement regarding Brian’s actions after Gabby’s disappearance.

Much of the documentary is centered around never-before-seen content, including body camera footage during a police interaction in Utah where authorities responded to a domestic dispute involving the couple. This footage, alongside other recordings, aims to provide viewers with a comprehensive view of the couple’s dynamics.

The filmmakers also utilized innovative techniques, such as AI-generated voiceovers based on Gabby’s journals, to present her perspective more intimately. Though her family approved this method, they expressed mixed feelings about its execution.
