Uncovering the Hidden Life of Robert Redford: Neighbors Share Insights on the Oscar Legend’s ‘Quiet’ Existence in the Bay Area

For four wonderful years, Robert Redford and his wife, Sibylle Szaggars, called a charming hillside home in Tiburon, California, their retreat. This cozy cottage, with stunning views of Angel Island and San Francisco Bay, became a special spot for them. They enjoyed Tiburon’s local restaurants, scenic promenade, and friendly community vibe.

In December of last year, they sold their home. Redford shared that they wanted to spend more time in Santa Fe, where Sibylle had her art gallery and they supported an arts nonprofit focused on global conservation.

With the recent news of Redford’s passing at 89, many in Tiburon remember him fondly. Locals describe him as a gracious man who often walked through town and enjoyed dining at local eateries. A waiter recalled, “Everyone misses him because he was nice and a class act.”

Interestingly, Redford and Szaggars acquired their Tiburon home in 2020, the same year they lost Redford’s son, James. James was a filmmaker and activist known for his work on environmental issues and organ donation awareness after undergoing two liver transplants himself. He passed away from bile duct cancer at 58, leaving behind a legacy of compassion and advocacy.

James once said, “A person who chooses to donate their organs gives others life. How amazing is that?” His films, including a touching piece on organ donation, showcased his commitment to helping others.

The connection between father and son ran deep. Redford carried the emotional weight of losing James, which affected him profoundly. As one Tiburon resident noted, Redford often shared his feelings about his son’s absence, showing that even a legend can feel a tremendous loss.

A local remembered Redford’s love for nature. “He knew the name of every flower and plant,” she said. Redford enjoyed exploring the nearby trails, always approachable with a friendly wave, though he preferred not to be disturbed for autographs.

Their Tiburon home reflected their lifestyle choice: privacy and a love for the outdoors. Nestled at the end of a quiet road, it featured large windows and beautifully designed gardens filled with drought-resistant plants, like lavender and succulents.

In late December 2024, they sold the house for $4.65 million, a price above their asking. Redford expressed his affection for Tiburon, mentioning how much they appreciated the area’s outdoor access and friendly community.

As the community mourns, one thing is clear: Robert Redford’s legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew him. His kindness and passion for life left an imprint on both his family and the world around him.

For those interested in the intersection of art and activism, Redford’s life can be a touchstone. A recent report from the National Endowment for the Arts found that arts funding can drive initiatives in conservation and social change, highlighting the importance of creative expression in making a difference.
