The story of graphene’s discovery is quite fascinating. It was first isolated in a lab, and the scientists behind this achievement were awarded the 2010 Nobel Prize in Physics. Interestingly, Thomas Edison might have created graphene back in the 19th century without even realizing it. A recent study published in the journal ACS Nano explores this possibility, suggesting that Edison’s experiments with light bulbs could have produced graphene as a byproduct.

James Tour, a chemist at Rice University and co-author of the study, said, “Recreating what Edison did with today’s tools is exciting. It makes us wonder what else we might discover by revisiting past experiments.” This kind of curiosity could lead to groundbreaking insights and innovations.

Edison didn’t invent incandescent bulbs; versions existed before him but often burned out quickly and needed high electric currents. He tried several filament materials, including carbon dioxide and even various plants, but found that carbonized bamboo worked best. This filament lasted over 1200 hours with a 110-volt power source.

In a twist, Lucas Eddy, a graduate student working with Tour, aimed to find affordable ways to mass-produce graphene. His initial ideas, such as using arc welders or lightning, didn’t yield results. However, he realized Edison’s light bulb could reach the high temperatures necessary for creating what’s known as turbostratic graphene. This insight could pave the way for more practical applications of graphene.

Recent statistics highlight a rising interest in graphene research. A 2022 report noted over 1,500 active research projects focused on graphene’s capabilities across different fields. As the world looks for innovative solutions to energy storage and sustainable technologies, graphene could be at the forefront.
