Sometimes, robots on Mars and orbiting spacecraft send back incredible pictures of the planet’s surface. These images can show all sorts of things, from interesting rock shapes to things that make us laugh, like “avocado rock.” Recently, a photo showing what looks like a square structure captured a lot of attention.
This square structure was photographed by the Mars Global Surveyor’s camera. It gained even more buzz after Joe Rogan and Elon Musk shared it on social media. The structure appears striking, but there’s more to the story.
The image has gone through some editing, but it remains a real photo from the orbiter. The area it shows is about 3 kilometers (1.9 miles) wide. Many people have speculated wildly about this square shape, suggesting it might be an ancient alien settlement. However, it’s likely just an example of interesting rock formations.
Nature often creates shapes that appear structured, from the hexagonal columns of Giant’s Causeway on Earth to the polar hexagons on Saturn. Geological processes can lead to familiar shapes without needing to involve extraterrestrial beings. Sometimes, our brains tend to see patterns where none exist, a phenomenon called pareidolia. This is why some people see a square in the rocks and shadows in that Mars photo.
Carl Sagan once explained that our ability to recognize patterns helped our ancestors survive. Early humans who could identify potential threats, like a hidden lion, had a better chance of living to pass on their genes. Sometimes, people misinterpret random patterns as familiar shapes, leading them to see faces or structures in clouds, rocks, or even on distant planets like Mars.
While scientists dream of finding life on other planets, they also emphasize the importance of ruling out natural explanations first. History has shown the dangers of jumping to conclusions. In the late 19th century, astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli drew maps of what he believed were canals on Mars. Percival Lowell popularized this idea, suggesting they were built by an alien civilization. Many were excited, but later evidence disproved these claims.
Despite the exciting possibility of ancient Martians, it’s more probable that what we see in photos is just a trick of nature and our minds. Those square shapes are likely just rocks shaped by natural forces over time, similar to what we see here on Earth.
