U.S. Attorney Joseph Nocella described how these advanced gadgets gave perpetrators an unfair advantage. “The victims were at the mercy of concealed technology,” he stated. These tools ensured victims lost significant amounts during high-stakes games.

Sal Piacente, a gaming security expert, noted that many devices involved in cheating are inexpensive to produce, making them accessible to potential fraudsters. “You could make a lucrative career buying this stuff,” he added. These underground games generally lack the surveillance present in regulated casinos, allowing the scam to continue undetected.
The Deckmate was not implicated in the charges, but similar machines were hacked at the Black Hat security conference in Las Vegas, revealing vulnerabilities in their design. This raises interesting questions about the intersection of technology and gambling integrity.
Moreover, the human element played a crucial role in the scheme. The rigged machines transmitted information about players’ hands to an off-site operator, dubbed the “quarterback.” Communication between this operator and players at the table ensured that they maintained a winning edge.
