Recent research has shed light on the biggest myths surrounding immune health in the UK. Surprisingly, many people still believe in old adages, like the idea that eating an apple a day will boost their immunity. In fact, 29% of Brits hold this belief. Meanwhile, a curious half of the population strives for immunity boosts through unusual methods, including daily headstands (5%), wearing raw onion slices in socks (4%), and even spinning in circles (3%).

This survey, conducted by Herbalife, questioned 7,000 individuals across Europe, including 1,000 from the UK. It explored their health and lifestyle habits. The findings revealed that one in five Brits (18%) thinks having regular sex is a way to support their immune system.
Nutrition expert Dr. Richard Alison, who works with Herbalife, aims to dispel these myths. He explains that while diet and exercise are crucial, the immune system is influenced by various factors. Balanced nutrition, sufficient sleep, regular exercise, stress management, and hydration all play significant roles. Dr. Alison points out, “It’s about making consistent, informed choices that support your overall wellbeing.”
Interestingly, although 71% of Brits see themselves as healthy, only about 56% maintain a balanced diet. Alarmingly, 10% admit they rarely or never eat healthily. Stress is also a major concern, with 65% feeling stressed—slightly lower than the European average of 70%. In the UK, just over half (51%) feel they have a good work-life balance, compared to 45% across other surveyed countries.
Only 42% of participants believe in the effectiveness of supplements for good immune health. This belief translates to only 43% actually incorporating supplements or nutrient-rich foods into their daily routines. Stress and poor dietary habits raise questions about the long-term impact on health and immune function.
Dr. Alison notes, “Overall, our results highlight a positive view of health among Brits and a reasonable understanding of immune health. However, there are cautionary tales about lifestyle choices that could affect health over time.” He acknowledges that many people lead busy lives, making it hard to maintain the perfect diet and exercise routine.
