Robert T. Burrus Jr. has been appointed as the new provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW). He will officially step into this role on May 1. Previously, he served as interim provost, where he led with reliability and insight during a challenging time for the university.
Burrus has a long history with UNCW, having joined the faculty in 1998. Over the years, he has taken on multiple leadership positions, including chair of the Department of Economics and Finance. His focus has always been on nurturing academic strength and fostering collaboration within the university.
Chancellor Aswani K. Volety highlighted Burrus’s critical role as UNCW approaches its 80th anniversary. He praised Burrus for his ability to guide the university in launching new academic programs and enhancing technology in learning environments. Under Burrus’s leadership, UNCW aims to address the complex challenges facing higher education today, all while remaining committed to student success.
With nearly 30 years of experience, Burrus’s expertise will be vital as he oversees academic programs and initiatives. This includes promoting excellence in teaching and research and supporting faculty, staff, and student achievements. His goals align closely with the university’s mission of fostering transparency and innovation.
Burrus holds a master’s and doctoral degree in economics from the University of Virginia, along with a bachelor’s from Wake Forest University. He also completed the UNC System’s Executive Leadership Program in 2024. Originally from Kinston, North Carolina, he is passionate about enhancing academic success and economic growth in the southeastern part of the state.
This leadership change comes at a significant time when educational institutions are evolving rapidly. According to a recent report by the National Center for Education Statistics, enrollment in U.S. colleges and universities has decreased by 5% since 2019. This emphasizes the need for strong leadership to navigate the shifting landscape of higher education.
