Heads up, train travelers! Starting December 26, 2025, ticket prices for Indian Railways will increase for long journeys. Why the hike? The Indian Railways cites rising operational and maintenance costs. The extra revenue from this fare change is projected to generate around INR 600 crore between now and the end of March 2026, helping to support improvements in safety and infrastructural upgrades.
For instance, if you’re traveling from New Delhi to Prayagraj (around 650 km), your fare will increase by INR 13 in AC and sleeper classes. Such revisions are not new; this is the second time rail fares have changed this financial year. The last adjustment occurred on July 1, 2025.
Notably, India’s new Vande Bharat Sleeper trains are set to offer tickets at even higher rates than the existing premium Rajdhani Express. The sleeper trains come with enhanced comfort, better safety features, and faster speeds, reflecting airline-level pricing. Minimum fares for these trains are as follows:
- INR 960 for 3AC
- INR 1,240 for 2AC
- INR 1,520 for 1AC
The Vande Bharat Sleeper trains are built with advanced safety systems, including an automatic train protection system (Kavach), and they feature emergency communication and disinfectant technologies to keep everything clean.
