Understanding the Human Cost: Why Hamas Is Targeting Palestinians Amid the Ongoing Food Crisis Caused by the Israeli Blockade

Cairo: Six Palestinians were executed by Hamas in Gaza, with 13 others shot in the legs for allegedly looting food stores and community kitchens. This comes as desperation rises under an Israeli blockade that has lasted over two months.

Hamas warned that those who ignore their orders will face severe consequences. Reports have emerged of armed gangs looting the remaining food supplies in Gaza City, challenging Hamas’s authority. The group has accused some of these gangs of collaborating with Israel.

Ismail Al-Thawabta, head of Hamas’s media office, stated that many looters are part of organized groups, some allegedly receiving support from Israel. He mentioned that several “revolutionary executions” were carried out against major criminals involved in the looting.

Additionally, a police officer was reportedly killed when an Israeli drone targeted a unit pursuing criminals in Gaza City. Hamas vowed to act decisively against these groups, calling them threats to public safety.

In response to the rampant looting, Hamas has implemented curfews starting at 9 PM to control civilian movement and pursue criminals. Many Gazans support these actions, viewing the looters as accomplices of Israel, contributing to the ongoing starvation in the region.

“These gangs not only steal food but also rob people in the streets,” said Ahmed, a Gaza City resident. “They must be treated as collaborators.” In an effort to restore order, Hamas has formed a new force of 5,000 members specifically to confront looters.

The situation in Gaza is increasingly grim. United Nations officials have warned about the escalating humanitarian crisis following the Israeli response to the Hamas-led attack on October 7, 2023. Since then, over 52,500 Palestinians have been killed, while Israel maintains its blockade, citing concerns that Hamas diverts aid meant for civilians.

The blockade has sparked anger among the population, often leading to protests against Hamas for not effectively addressing the worsening food shortages. Many residents feel trapped as Israeli military operations restrict movement and access to resources.

This dire situation highlights the strain on everyday lives in Gaza. The humanitarian crisis underscores the urgent need for solutions as tensions and desperation continue to rise.
