The Multnomah Athletic Club (MAC) is closed for at least a week due to serious damage from a shocking incident. A man drove a vehicle packed with explosives into the front of the clubhouse early Saturday morning.
The club’s staff shared on social media, “Our main goal is to ensure safety and prepare for your return.” They acknowledged that repairs will take time.
Witnesses report that the driver was a former employee, allegedly disgruntled and struggling with mental health issues. This man crashed through the clubhouse’s windows, driving around inside while trying to set off explosives, according to Portland Police Commander James Crooker. Fortunately, most devices did not detonate, limiting damage.
By the time police arrived, the driver was found dead in his vehicle. Investigative sources suggest he had displayed troubling behavior in the past, including paranoia about MAC staff. Neighbors noted his mental health struggles intensified following a motorcycle accident years ago.
One neighbor shared, “He became paranoid and aggressive.” They witnessed disturbing actions, including erratic behavior and property damage. Despite attempts to get him help, they felt their concerns were ignored.
Mental health experts stress the importance of community awareness and support when it comes to individuals facing struggles. According to a recent study, nearly 1 in 5 adults experience mental illness, yet many do not receive the help they need. This incident highlights the critical issue of mental health awareness and preventive measures.
Inside MAC, damage was significant. Firefighters had to deal with flooding and charred remains from the incident. Portland’s bomb squad, alongside the FBI, faced complex challenges as they worked to secure the area and dispose of any remaining explosives. Officer Jim DeFrain described it as one of the most complicated scenes he’s handled in years.
Despite this turmoil, MAC staff remains optimistic about reopening. They’ve faced challenges before and believe in their community’s resilience. “Together, we will find a way through this,” they posted.
