The Uddanam region in Srikakulam district is grappling with a serious health issue: chronic kidney disease of unknown origin (CKDu). A recent study sheds light on the various factors contributing to this troubling condition.

One significant finding is that individuals from lower castes are more affected. Education plays a big role too. In Uddanam, where about one-third of the population is illiterate, lack of knowledge can be a major risk factor, especially for farmers and daily laborers who work in agriculture.

Interestingly, staying active seems to help. Higher levels of physical activity are linked to lower rates of proteinuria, which is an early sign of kidney damage. Unfortunately, harmful habits like smoking and drinking locally made alcohol are tied to a higher risk of CKDu.

The research team, including experts from Andhra University, studied 2,806 participants from areas known for high CKD cases. They found a stark difference in water consumption between those with CKDu and healthy individuals. Earlier research has also linked low fluid intake to kidney disease.

The researchers emphasized how socioeconomic factors, education, and lifestyle choices affect CKDu rates. They noted that the rising healthcare costs for those with advanced CKDu can be overwhelming.

The findings highlight a pressing need for targeted interventions to tackle this disease. Solutions might include education programs and promoting healthier lifestyles. In communities like Uddanam, where health disparities are pronounced, such efforts could make a vital difference in improving overall health outcomes and reducing the burden of CKDu.
