Deep in Brazil’s fossil beds, scientists have made an exciting discovery: a clutch of 47 crocodyliform eggs, relatives of today’s crocodiles. Led by Dr. Giovanna M. X. Paixão, this research, published in the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology, gives us new insights into how these ancient reptiles reproduced.
The clutch, named MPM 447, is the largest ever found from the Mesozoic era. Discovered in Upper Cretaceous layers of the Bauru Group, these eggs were in outstanding condition, allowing researchers to learn about crocodyliform reproductive strategies. Excavation took three years, from 2021 to 2023, and the findings are reshaping our understanding of these ancient creatures.
Dr. Paixão emphasizes that the size of this clutch offers clues about different reproductive strategies: “The difference in clutch size reflects taxon-specific adaptations.” This means that these crocodyliforms had unique ways of laying eggs and taking care of their young.
Interestingly, MPM 447 contrasts with typical smaller clutches found in this era, hinting at more complex reproductive behaviors. The eggs are ellipsoidal with thin shells, showing they were likely laid in humid conditions. Other eggs from the same region, adapted to drier climates, reveal that these species might have thrived in wet habitats.
The nests exhibit arrangements that suggest communal nesting, where multiple species could lay eggs in one area. Fossils of theropod dinosaurs found nearby strengthen this idea—indicating that various reptiles shared this space.
The Bauru Group itself is a standout location for paleontology. It’s filled with well-preserved fossils, shedding light on species like titanosaurs, turtles, and snakes. This rich diversity helps scientists understand the ancient ecosystems better. The eggs provide a rare chance to compare reproductive strategies of different species, revealing how they may have interacted.
Looking ahead, Dr. Paixão and her team plan to study more egg clutches from this site, including those from theropods. Their findings could teach us about the social behaviors and reproductive strategies of ancient reptiles, much like modern-day crocodiles that show parental care.
