A United Airlines flight headed to Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport had to land unexpectedly in Madison, Wisconsin, due to concerns about an unruly passenger. This incident happened on Friday evening.
The flight took off from Chicago O’Hare International Airport at 8:02 p.m. CDT and landed in Madison at 9:29 p.m. CDT, as confirmed by FlightAware. The Dane County Sheriff’s Office reported that a 75-year-old man caused the diversion. He seemed confused and was in a mental health crisis.
Audio from air traffic control revealed that one of the pilots mentioned law enforcement on board had “subdued” the man before landing. Fortunately, no one was hurt during the incident. The man was detained, and his family in Minnesota was informed. They were on their way to Wisconsin to reunite with him, and the sheriff’s office stated that no criminal charges would be filed.
The FBI is also looking into what happened during the flight. After the diversion, the remaining passengers were able to continue their journey. The plane left Madison at 1:25 a.m. CDT and reached its original destination at 2:19 a.m. Saturday.
Mental health issues on flights are becoming a concerning trend. In fact, a recent report found that instances of disruptive behavior on flights have increased by 30% in the past year alone. Experts suggest that airlines need better training for their staff to handle such situations.
This incident raises awareness about the importance of mental health support, especially in stressful environments like air travel. According to a 2022 survey by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), 52% of airline crew reported feeling unequipped to handle mental health crises.
Overall, flying can be stressful, and the challenges some passengers face may require more support and understanding from both airlines and fellow passengers.
