San Jose State University’s graduation day was filled with joy for one special family from Gilroy. Not only did Juan Carlos Soliz Meza and his daughter Brianna Calvillo both graduate, but Juan Carlos also took the opportunity to propose to his longtime partner, Alma Sanchez.

Their journey wasn’t easy. As a child, Juan Carlos faced a tough start. After falling from a tree, he struggled with mobility issues. His mother, unable to afford a wheelchair, carried him for hours to see doctors in Mexico. That experience left a mark on him. He vowed, “One day, I will be on the other side of the desk and help others.”

Years later, Juan Carlos fulfilled that promise by earning a Master’s degree in social work, graduating alongside Brianna, who received her degree in animation and illustration. Brianna shared, “My dad has always been there for me. It feels normal to have him by my side.”

The graduation ceremony became even more memorable when Juan Carlos proposed to Alma on stage. Nervous but excited, he took the mic and asked her to marry him. Alma’s reaction was priceless: “I didn’t hear anything else. I just saw the ring.” She happily accepted.

Their focus now shifts to celebrating this milestone. Juan Carlos reflected on their achievements, stating, “I want you to know we did it together. Without my mother, daughter, and future wife, none of this would have been possible.”

Looking ahead, Juan Carlos is waiting for news about a social work position and is considering pursuing a Ph.D. Brianna is also planning to continue her education with a master’s degree.
