IRVINE, Calif. – The Concordia University Irvine softball team had a mixed day at Great Park, starting with a loss but finishing with a thrilling win.
Game 1: Nebraska–Kearney 7, CUI 3
In the opener, CUI scored first. Ariana Robles hit a triple down the right-field line and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Maddy Kneubuhle. However, Nebraska–Kearney quickly gained control, with key hits extending their lead. CUI fought back in the seventh when Kailani Tatro, pinch hitting, launched her first collegiate home run, a two-run shot to center. Despite the late surge, CUI fell short, losing 7-3.
Game 2: CUI 5, Western Washington 4
The second game was much more exciting. CUI started down 4-1 but sparked a comeback in the sixth inning. Kailani Tatro once again came through, hitting a two-run double to tie the game. The momentum shifted, and CUI capitalized on some defensive errors. In the bottom of the seventh, Victoria Moore reached base, and Robles hit a double. An error allowed Robles to cross home plate, clinching the 5-4 victory for the Golden Eagles.
In a standout performance, Kayla Gossett dominated on the mound during the final inning, striking out two and sealing the win.
With a current record of 3-1, Concordia University Irvine looks to keep the momentum going when they face Colorado State Pueblo on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. at Great Park.
This weekend’s games show how quickly fortunes can change in sports. A slow start can flip to victory with teamwork and determination. It’s a lesson not just for athletes, but for anyone facing challenges in their daily lives!
