We recently visited our daughter at college and got the chance to attend a football game. Her Texas Longhorns were playing against my husband’s Sam Houston Bearkats. It’s common for smaller schools to face off with the bigger ones, and while it can be a tough match, it’s a great experience for student-athletes.
For my husband, going to the Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium was a dream come true. He had never been before, while I had fond memories of attending games there when I cheered for my Baylor Bears. Unfortunately, the game ended with UT winning 55-0, which was a bit rough for us Bearkat fans.
Despite the heat, our seats gave us a stunning view of the action. It was also Hispanic Heritage Month, so we got to enjoy a mariachi band and delightful performances, along with the impressive Longhorn Band. Every time I see that band, I’m amazed by its size and energy.
While I hoped to spot Matthew McConaughey, another famous alum, we did catch a glimpse of Glen Powell, which was a fun surprise. But the highlight of the night was an incredible drone show that capped off the game.
Leading up to our trip, our daughter mentioned craving a good steak. We made plans to go to ALC Steaks, an independent family-owned steakhouse in Austin. Established in 1993, it offers a cozy vibe and delicious food. We all ordered ribeye steaks, paired with tasty sides. For dessert, we shared a slice of vanilla cheesecake that we couldn’t stop raving about.
Another dining highlight was stopping at Black’s Barbecue, the oldest family-run barbecue spot in Texas, which opened in 1932. We ordered a classic family-style meal with brisket and ribs, along with various sides. The food was incredible, and I’m already planning my next visit!
Before heading home, we stopped at Amy’s Ice Creams, a beloved local chain known for its creative flavors. I couldn’t resist trying a jalapeño popper ice cream, which combined cheesecake ice cream with roasted jalapeños and candied bacon. It was definitely unique and had quite the kick! We tried a variety of flavors and settled on strawberry, dark chocolate, and more. If you find yourself in the Austin area, Amy’s is a must-try for its fun flavors and local charm.
As we returned home, we reflected on a memorable trip filled with good food, fun, and family moments.
