The Jr. All Native Basketball Tournament (JANT) wrapped up recently in the Syilx Okanagan Nation, and it was a record-breaking event. From March 16 to 21, Kelowna welcomed 113 teams from over 100 First Nations communities, making it the largest youth sports gathering in the province’s history. A total of 278 games were played in seven divisions.

According to Tara Montgomery, the tournament director, Kelowna is frequently chosen to host the event because of its excellent facilities and organization. “Every three years, we seem to be the top choice,” she shared. JANT occurs every spring break and alternates locations among Northern, Coastal, and Interior B.C.
This year, the tournament introduced an under-10 division for the first time, while the under-13 division—launched in 2017—continues to grow in popularity.
In the U17 boys’ competition, the Vancouver Van City Warriors claimed victory, with standout player Keoni Sacco earning MVP honors for his impressive 171 points throughout the tournament. The Lax Kw’alaams Strike Force and the Prince Rupert Ts’ap secured silver and bronze, respectively.
The U17 girls’ title went to the Nuxalk At’maakw from Bella Coola, who celebrated their third consecutive win. The Vancouver Panthers took second, and the Tseshaht Pride from Alberni Valley finished with bronze.
Looking ahead, the JANT 2026 will be hosted by the Vancity Reign at the Langley Events Centre.
Youth sports events like JANT are critical for community building, giving young athletes a chance to showcase their talents and foster pride in their heritage. According to a 2022 report by the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport, youth participation in sports helps build self-esteem and promotes healthy lifestyles. With sports like basketball, these tournaments also help preserve cultural connections among Indigenous communities.
Overall, JANT is more than just a basketball tournament—it’s a celebration of culture, resilience, and teamwork.
