Morgan Freeman paid tribute to Gene Hackman during the Academy Awards, calling him a “giant” of the film industry. This heartfelt acknowledgment came in the in memoriam segment of the show.
Sadly, Hackman, 95, and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, 65, were found dead in their New Mexico home just days before the ceremony. The circumstances of their deaths have left many in Hollywood and the Santa Fe community puzzled and searching for answers.
Freeman and Hackman shared the screen in two films: the classic western “Unforgiven,” which won Hackman his second Oscar, and the thriller “Under Suspicion.” Reflecting on their time together, Freeman described Hackman as a generous actor who brought out the best in everyone around him.
Freeman also shared that Hackman often said he didn’t think much about his legacy. Instead, he hoped to be remembered for striving to do good work. “Gene, you’ll be remembered for that, and for so much more,” Freeman concluded.
The decision to honor Hackman was made quickly by the telecast producers. Just days before, authorities discovered Hackman’s body in a mudroom, next to his cane and sunglasses. Arakawa was found nearby in a bathroom, with an open prescription bottle and scattered pills around her.
Initial reports suggest Hackman died on February 17, according to a sheriff’s statement. The investigation continues as officials delve into the details of their deaths, needing time to interview acquaintances and awaiting toxicology and autopsy results.
