Nevada Women’s Basketball Triumphs Against Wyoming
The Nevada Women’s Basketball team recently claimed a nail-biting 70-60 overtime victory over Wyoming at the Lawlor Events Center. This win marks their second consecutive triumph, pushing their season record to 6-9 and 2-3 in the Mountain West.
Skylar Durley, honored as the Old Trapper Mountain West Freshman of the Week, stood out with 18 points and a career-high 14 rebounds, securing her first double-double. Ahrray Young contributed too, scoring 11 points and grabbing eight boards.
The game took a critical turn in the fourth quarter when Nevada’s defense intensified, capped by a crucial block from Young. This effort forced the match into overtime, where the team’s resilience shone through. During the final five minutes, Nevada’s defense conceded only one point—thanks to a free throw—while their offense scored six points, shooting an impressive 83.3% from the field.
During overtime, Nevada completely neutralized Wyoming’s offense, allowing just one point and outscoring them 11-1.
The team started strong, going 7-for-7 in the first five minutes, including perfect shooting from beyond the arc and the free throw line. They established an early lead with a 10-0 run, effectively taking advantage of a scoring drought for Wyoming.
However, the second quarter was a different story. Nevada managed only six points and went without a field goal for nearly four minutes. This allowed Wyoming to narrow the gap to just two points by halftime, trailing 45-41.
The third quarter remained tight, with the teams almost evenly matched in scoring. The intensity continued into the fourth, featuring numerous ties and lead changes, ultimately necessitating overtime.
Statistics reflect Nevada’s dominance on the boards, outperforming Wyoming 40-28 and tallying 24 bench points compared to Wyoming’s six.
Next, Nevada will hit the road to face New Mexico, aiming to balance their conference record on Saturday at 12 p.m.
