A buzz filled the air at the Arkansas State Fair on Saturday, as families enjoyed the festivities under sunny skies. This is the 85th annual fair, and it’s easy to see why folks come back year after year.
Families pushed strollers while teens caught up with friends and enjoyed classic fair food like corn dogs and pizza. Patrick Hayes strolled around wearing a Darren McFadden jersey. He shared that they attend the fair almost every year. “It’s just fun family time,” he said.
The sea lion show was a hit. These playful animals captivated the audience with impressive tricks, drawing crowds eager to watch. Nearby, the adorable livestock races featured goats, sheep, and chickens, adding a touch of humor to the event. One chicken, “Kylo Hen,” didn’t quite keep up with the others, but the audience cheered her on nonetheless.
While some sought relaxation at the adult bake-off, thrilling rides attracted others. Over 40 rides filled the Midway, with sounds of laughter and screams mingling in the air. A mechanical bull captured the attention of brave riders, young and old.
Concerts added to the excitement, with performers like Lonestar and 38 Special scheduled to entertain. Some fairgoers even tuned into the Arkansas Razorbacks football game, creating a festive atmosphere.
Among the stands, David Tominus and Jocelyn Chrzan showcased their Butterfly Affect exhibit. Visitors enjoyed a unique experience feeding butterflies and snapping selfies. “It’s all about moments at the fair,” Tominus expressed.
Myla James was crowned Little Toddler Miss Arkansas State Fair Queen early in the day, adding to the fair’s charm. With over 50 food vendors, options ranged from crunchy turkey legs to sweet deep-fried treats.
Fun activities including games and contests provided chances to win prizes. A challenge asked participants to hang from a metal bar for two minutes, with many trying their luck for a $150 prize.
This year, the fair introduced a new traffic pattern to streamline parking. Attendees navigated their way, and local residents were ready to offer parking on their lawns.
The 84th edition of the fair last year welcomed over 500,000 guests, showcasing its popularity. With numerous attractions and great weather, this year’s fair promises to be just as memorable, continuing until October 19. The atmosphere is vibrant, and for many, it’s a cherished tradition that brings the community together.
