Whatcom County is buzzing this February! With Valentine’s Day and Black History Month happening, there’s a lot to enjoy this weekend. From live music to lively dance sessions, there’s something for everyone.
On Saturday, February 15, Aslan Brewing celebrates the 7th anniversary of its second location, Aslan Depot, in downtown Bellingham. It’s a free celebration filled with beer specials, craft cocktails, and live music by the local band Cuttlefish. The fun starts at noon, with live music kicking off at 7 p.m. Head over to 1322 N. State Street to join in the festivities!
February is also Black History Month. To honor this, the Firehouse Arts and Events Center in Fairhaven will screen Breaking Boundaries on Saturday evening. This documentary tells the inspiring story of Nastasya Generalova, a Black gymnast from California. It highlights her experiences as the only Black member of Team USA, along with her close bond with her mother as they prepared for the Tokyo Olympics. The film starts at 7 p.m., and tickets are just $12. The Firehouse Center is located at 1314 Harris Ave.
The Firehouse Arts and Events Center also needs our support after a recent burglary caused $9,000 in damage. Attending this event is a great way to help them recover.
If you’re in the mood to dance, join the Bellingham Salsa Collective on Sunday at 5:30 p.m. at The Majestic, located at 1027 N. Forest St. They offer a 30-minute beginner class followed by an hour for levels 1 and 2. From 7 to 8 p.m., the floor is open for everyone to dance. A $10 donation is suggested, but you can join for free if that’s better for your budget. Check out the Bellingham Salsa Collective’s Facebook page for more details.
For a special Valentine’s Day treat, check out Devotchka at the Mount Baker Theatre on February 14 at 7:30 p.m. This Colorado band mixes indie rock with influences from cabaret, norteño, and Eastern European dance music. Tickets start at $34.
If you’re looking for more Valentine’s Day plans, there are plenty more events happening in Whatcom County!
