Philemon Yang, the president of the United Nations General Assembly, is visiting India for four days starting Tuesday. This visit comes at the invitation of External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar.
During his time in India, Yang and Jaishankar will meet to talk about important regional and global issues. Yang is also set to meet with President Droupadi Murmu to discuss various matters of mutual interest.
The UNGA president’s itinerary includes a trip to Bengaluru, where he will visit Infosys and the Indian Institute of Science. Here, he will connect with experts and learn about India’s advancements in sustainability and digital infrastructure.
Yang began his role as UNGA president on September 10. Under his leadership, the UN has adopted a vision document called “A Pact for the Future,” which aims to foster multilateral solutions for a better tomorrow. Before this, he served as Cameroon’s prime minister.
Last September, Jaishankar met Yang in New York, where he expressed India’s support for Yang’s vision of unity, peace, and human dignity. Recently, on social media, Yang shared insights from their discussions about priorities for the upcoming UNGA79 meeting and praised India’s efforts to advance the interests of the Global South.
