Unhealthy Air Quality in Dhaka: AQI Reaches 110, Impacting Sensitive Groups

Dhaka, the bustling capital of Bangladesh, recently ranked 10th for poor air quality, with an AQI score of 110. This level is classified as “unhealthy for sensitive groups,” indicating potential health risks, especially for those with respiratory issues.

The city’s air quality has been concerning for several days. When the AQI scores fall between 50 and 100, the air is considered “moderate.” However, anything above that raises alarms. Scores between 101 and 150 put sensitive individuals at risk, while scores from 151 to 200 are labeled “unhealthy.” Levels between 201 and 300 are “very unhealthy,” and anything above 301 is “hazardous,” posing serious health threats.

According to recent reports, cities like Riyadh, Kuwait City, and Delhi have even worse air quality, with staggering AQI scores of 876, 278, and 248, respectively. This paints a global picture of increasing pollution.

The AQI measures air quality through five key pollutants: particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5), Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2), Carbon Monoxide (CO), Sulfur Dioxide (SO2), and ozone. Such an index allows people to understand how clean or polluted their air is and helps them take precautions.

Historically, Dhaka’s air quality tends to worsen in winter but improves during the monsoon season. According to the World Health Organization, air pollution claims about seven million lives globally each year, primarily due to respiratory diseases and heart complications.

As cities around the world face similar pollution challenges, it’s evident that urgent action is necessary. Community awareness and proactive measures are vital to improving air quality for a healthier future.
