Union Minister Piyush Goyal Launches India MedTech Expo 2025: Key GST Reforms Paving the Way for Atmanirbhar Bharat

Union Minister for Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, recently kicked off the India MedTech Expo 2025 at Bharat Mandapam, Pragati Maidan, in New Delhi. This annual event brings together various stakeholders from the medical technology sector, organized by the Department of Pharmaceuticals and other significant ministries.

During his speech, Goyal stressed the importance of recent GST reforms. He believes these changes will encourage self-reliance and foster India’s growth towards becoming a developed nation by 2047. He called for collective effort among all Indians to achieve this vision.

Dr. Rajiv Bahl, Secretary of the Department of Health Research, also spoke at the expo. He highlighted the need for a strong partnership between academia and industry. Initiatives like MedTech Mitra and Patent Mitra are designed to connect research institutions with industry players. This collaboration is essential for innovation and for enhancing India’s position in the global healthcare arena.

Several officials, including Nitin Kumar Yadav and Dr. Rajiv Singh Raghuvanshi, discussed India’s favorable regulatory reforms. These changes aim to boost the ease of doing business and establish India as a hub for healthcare and wellness. The focus is on creating supportive regulatory frameworks that promote rapid growth and increase global competitiveness in the MedTech sector.

The medical devices market in India, currently valued at around USD 15 billion, is expected to double by 2030. This growth is fueled by over 800 startups, robust research and development, and a strong manufacturing base. Praveen Kumar Mittal from the Export Promotion Council for Medical Devices mentioned this promising outlook during the event.

The expo lasts three days and carries the theme ‘India: Global MedTech Manufacturing Hub – Precision Engineering yet Affordable.’ It features participation from over 150 international buyers from more than 30 countries. This event showcases innovations from startups, MSMEs, and research institutions, facilitating partnerships to improve healthcare access both in India and worldwide.

India’s ambition to become a leading MedTech manufacturing hub is supported by various industry associations, including AIMED, FICCI, and CII. Their backing is pivotal for realizing this vision. Recent surveys indicate a positive trend among consumers, with increasing trust in domestic medical technologies. This shift in perception is likely to drive further growth in the sector.

With such strong foundations, India is on the path to not just meeting its domestic healthcare needs but also becoming a key player in the global MedTech landscape.
