On January 20, 2025, President Trump announced plans to withdraw the United States from the Paris Agreement. This agreement, signed by nearly 200 countries in 2015, aims to limit global climate change. If the U.S. formally exits, it will be the second time the country has done so.
Trump’s announcement comes at a time when California is facing devastating wildfires. Recently, scientific reports confirmed that 2024 was the hottest year on record. Additionally, the U.S. dealt with 27 extreme weather events that cost over $1 billion each, many of which were intensified by climate change.
Dr. Rachel Cleetus, a policy expert at the Union of Concerned Scientists, stated, “Withdrawing from the Paris Agreement is a serious mistake. It shows a disregard for the scientific evidence and the real impacts of climate change on communities.” She emphasized that the scientific need to tackle climate change is urgent and that global temperatures are rising dangerously.
Soon, we could see a substantial increase in global temperatures unless we act quickly. The U.S., being a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, has a key role in addressing these challenges.
Instead of promoting clean energy benefits, Trump’s decision appears aimed at supporting the fossil fuel industry. This move raises concerns not only for climate policy but also for the U.S.’s standing in international discussions on important global issues.
