The Bharat Electricity Summit 2026 (BES 2026) brought together key leaders, including Union Power Minister Manohar Lal and Minister of State for Power Shripad Naik. Their goal was to discuss India’s energy security and push for power sector reforms.

Minister Manohar Lal presented some impressive facts about India’s power sector:
- Installed capacity exceeds 520 GW.
- Distribution companies, or DISCOMs, are improving.
- Smart meters are rapidly being introduced.
- Power shortages are decreasing.
He emphasized the importance of better coordination between the Centre and the states to provide affordable and reliable power.
During the meeting, Mr. Lal also focused on energy security amid global uncertainties. He pointed out crucial steps needed:
- Boosting per capita energy consumption.
- Spurring renewable energy growth.
- Considering nuclear energy as a clean option.
He introduced the SHANTI Act, aiming to strengthen India’s energy framework. States can expect full Central support for any necessary reforms.
Shripad Naik highlighted how technology, especially Artificial Intelligence (AI), is changing the power sector. Innovations in smart metering, grid efficiency, and customer service are high on the agenda. Notably, almost 50% of India’s installed capacity now comes from non-fossil fuel sources, a promising step towards sustainability.
Two significant reports were also shared: the Consumer Service Ratings of DISCOMs (CSRD) and the Distributing Utilities Ranking (DUR). The CSRD Report assessed DISCOMs on parameters such as billing accuracy and grievance resolution, revealing that service quality has improved. It rated 66 DISCOMs, with six achieving an A+ rating.
The DUR Report evaluated utilities on their financial health and operational efficiency, offering a broad view of the sector’s status. This report aims to create a financially stable and consumer-friendly power distribution network.
The discussions at BES 2026 stressed the need for:
- Robust collaboration between different levels of government.
- Faster reforms in power distribution.
- Wider adoption of clean and emerging technologies.
As demand grows and global energy challenges continue, the proceedings at BES 2026 signal a major shift towards a resilient and sustainable power sector in India.
