Recently, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, along with UNICEF Vietnam, launched a significant environmental campaign to celebrate World Water Day, World Meteorological Day, and Earth Hour. This initiative is designed to raise awareness and inspire action on vital issues like water resources, climate, and energy.
During the launch, Deputy Minister Le Cong Thanh emphasized the importance of water, climate, and energy in sustainable development. He pointed out that in Vietnam, these elements play a crucial role in food security, livelihoods, and economic growth. However, climate change is intensifying existing challenges. Problems like rising water demand, pollution, and extreme weather events—such as storms and droughts—are becoming more common.
To tackle these issues, Thanh urged for urgent action across all sectors. He highlighted the need to improve water governance and disaster preparedness, along with developing a national database on natural resources. There’s a strong call for businesses to innovate and adopt sustainable practices, as well as for individuals to improve how they conserve water and energy.
A key part of the campaign is the program “Children and youth acting for clean air and a sustainable future.” UNICEF Representative Silvia Danailov noted that nearly all children in Vietnam face various environmental risks. She stressed that their voices are crucial in creating impactful change.
Interestingly, recent surveys show that young people are not just the victims of climate issues; they are also powerful agents of change. By involving them in environmental initiatives, communities can drive meaningful progress. Schools, local authorities, and businesses need to support these young activists to amplify their impact.
This year, the global themes for World Water Day and World Meteorological Day focus on gender equality and the importance of observation in disaster management. Earth Hour promotes sustainable lifestyles and energy conservation, reinforcing the idea that everyone shares responsibility for the planet.
During the campaign, various interactive activities took place, including a water protection exhibition and tree planting events. These activities aim not only to educate but also to engage the community in direct action for a greener future.
