United Airlines just raised its checked bag fee by $10, now charging $45 for the first bag if paid in advance, and $50 if done closer to the flight. This increase makes it the second U.S. airline to hike fees in a week.
The airline explained that this move helps cope with rising fuel costs. In fact, jet fuel prices have surged by over 82% since a recent conflict involving the U.S. and Israel, impacting all carriers.
JetBlue also increased its checked bag fees recently. Their adjustment varies based on when tickets are booked, with some charges going up to $9 per bag. Such fee hikes often lead to similar actions from competitors, creating a trend that travelers are becoming increasingly familiar with.
However, there are ways to avoid these charges. Passengers can benefit from airline credit cards that offer free checked bags, or they can sign up for frequent flyer programs. United also allows free bags for military members and passengers in premium cabins. Additionally, if you prepay your bag fee online at least 24 hours before your flight, you can still enjoy a $5 discount.
Higher fuel costs are affecting more than just airlines. Amazon recently introduced a 3.5% surcharge related to fuel and logistics for sellers using its services.
