On International Workers’ Day, Greenpeace activists joined forces with trade union allies worldwide. Together, we stand for a common cause: the protection of our rights and freedoms.
Greenpeace groups face increasing challenges from those who want to undermine our rights. This reflects a troubling trend where powerful interests aim to diminish the protections that safeguard democracy and the environment. The threats are coming from billionaires, corporate giants, and autocratic leaders who exploit vulnerable communities to maintain control. They aim to divide us, but our collective strength can resist these attempts.
Environmental activism, labor rights, and human rights are intricately linked. When one group is targeted, it affects us all. Global unity is crucial if we want to confront these challenges head-on.
Increased Attacks on Workers and Environmental Defenders
Across the globe, trade union leaders are facing serious threats, including arrests and violence, just for exercising their rights. At the same time, large fossil fuel companies target environmental defenders with aggressive lawsuits. This coordinated effort to intimidate is no accident. It’s a strategy to isolate those who speak out, but solidarity between labor and environmental movements can counteract this intimidation.
Protecting Free Speech and Workers’ Rights
Recently, Greenpeace International took a significant step against corporate bullying with a landmark anti-SLAPP case against Energy Transfer in Amsterdam. This case is crucial not just for Greenpeace but also sets a precedent for social movements globally. The EU’s new anti-SLAPP directive, which protects against abusive lawsuits, could serve as a vital tool for civil society.
Additionally, the global labor movement is working hard to safeguard the right to strike. In October 2025, organizations like the International Trade Union Confederation presented arguments at the International Court of Justice to protect this fundamental workers’ right. History shows that the right to strike has led to crucial gains, such as better wages and safer working conditions for millions. However, many workers, especially in modern gig economies, still face precarious conditions and lack essential protections.
Unity Against Corporate Intimidation
Billionaires and corporate leaders understand that collective action poses a significant threat to their interests. They aim to separate us and weaken our efforts. On this International Workers’ Day, we demonstrated our unity by marching together, emphasizing that our strength lies in collaboration.
As we navigate these challenges, it’s essential to remember that our struggles for labor rights, environmental justice, and freedom of speech are interconnected. By supporting one another, we can resist the tide of corporate intimidation and fight for a more equitable future.
