Greenpeace groups everywhere are facing similar attacks. Powerful forces are trying to undermine our rights and freedoms. This isn’t just a fight for environmentalists; it’s a battle for all workers, regardless of their field. Our struggles are linked. When one group suffers, we all feel the impact.
Currently, there’s a troubling alliance among corporate giants and authoritarian leaders. These individuals are working to roll back years of progress in labor and environmental rights, targeting vulnerable communities. They want us to fight among ourselves, but we have the strength to stand together.
Rising Attacks on Workers and Environmental Defenders
Across the world, union leaders are facing harassment, arrests, and violence simply for trying to uphold democratic values. At the same time, fossil fuel companies are launching lawsuits against environmental advocates. This trend shows a clear pattern of intimidation, affecting workers, journalists, and activists alike. It’s crucial that we don’t stay silent when any group is under threat.
Defending Free Speech and the Right to Protest
Recently, Greenpeace International took a significant stand in a landmark case against Energy Transfer in the EU, challenging their attempts to silence environmental advocates. This case could set a crucial precedent, protecting civil movements from abusive legal tactics.
Meanwhile, worldwide labor organizations are fighting to protect the right to strike. The International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) recently advocated at the International Court of Justice to uphold workers’ rights to protest unsafe conditions. Strikes have historically brought about positive change, like better pay and working conditions. However, many workers, especially in the gig economy, still lack protections.
The Power of Collective Action
Corporate leaders know the power of people uniting. They want to isolate us, but we are finding strength in our common goals. On this International Workers’ Day, that unity was clear. From environmentalists to everyday workers, people marched together, showing that solidarity is alive and well.
