Mount Mary University (MMU) is making strides to support its Muslim community. Recently, the university improved their Muslim prayer room, making it a more welcoming space for students. Theresa Utschig, the director of ministry, played a vital role in this transformation.

“When we renovated the prayer room, we focused on comfort and accessibility,” Utschig shared. They added furniture, school supplies, and a drawer of extra hijabs and prayer clothes. Regular cleaning and maintenance ensure it stays a peaceful place for worship. A digital prayer clock was installed, synced with local calls to prayer, or adhan. This thoughtful approach shows how MMU considers the needs of its diverse students.

In July 2022, Isabelle Cherney, Ph.D., became the new president of MMU. In her inaugural press release, she emphasized the university’s commitment to diversity and social justice. Shortly after, the university appointed Andrea Stapleton, Ph.D., as vice president for mission and justice. Stapleton sees the prayer space as essential for fostering community among Muslim students. “It’s not just a place for prayer; it helps build connections and support,” she noted.

Experts believe that fostering inclusive spaces in educational institutions can positively impact student well-being. According to a 2022 survey from the American Council on Education, 81% of college students feel that a supportive environment is crucial for their success.

Social media buzz has also highlighted MMU’s efforts. Posts showcasing the prayer room’s updates garnered positive reactions, with students expressing appreciation for the university’s commitment to inclusivity.
