University Achieves Prestigious Lincoln Family-Friendly Workplace Certification: What It Means for Students and Staff

The University of Nebraska–Lincoln (UNL) has earned the title of a Lincoln Family Friendly Workplace. This new designation spotlights organizations that support working families through thoughtful policies.

Ben Lennander, the assistant vice chancellor for human resources, emphasizes that UNL is dedicated to creating a family-oriented environment. “We offer benefits that truly matter to those raising children or managing caregiving duties,” he says. This reflects a deeper commitment to employees as whole persons, not just workers.

The Lincoln Family Friendly Workplace program, launched by the Lincoln Partnership for Economic Development and Lincoln Littles, highlights businesses prioritizing family well-being. Employers must meet specific criteria—like providing paid parental leave and flexible work schedules—to receive certification. In fact, employers need to pass at least seven out of ten key requirements to prove their dedication to family-friendly practices.

UNL went above and beyond by meeting all ten criteria. These include:

  • Paid Parental Leave: Eight weeks for birth and adoptive parents.
  • Flexible Work Arrangements: Options for remote or hybrid work.
  • Caregiver Support: Resources and parenting classes available.
  • Lactation Facilities: Dedicated spaces to support breastfeeding.
  • Health Benefits: Comprehensive coverage for families and dependents.

Statistically, nearly 70% of American workers juggle both professional and family responsibilities, which is why workplace support is crucial. In a survey, 88% of employees stated that family-friendly policies would improve their overall satisfaction with their jobs.

Certifications like this one not only help in talent retention but also serve as a marketing tool for recruitment. Organizations can proudly display a decal and digital badge that showcase their family-friendly commitment. As Lennander puts it, “This award reflects the culture we’ve built—one that values employees’ diverse lives.”

The emphasis on employee well-being and support continues to gain traction. As workplaces evolve, it’s vital for organizations to adapt and demonstrate that they care about their staff’s family lives, further enriching the community.
