BISMARCK — Audra Savelkoul, a standout student from Lansford, has been awarded the 2026 University of Mary Alumni Association Outstanding Senior Award. University of Mary President Monsignor James Shea presented her with this honor on April 25, just before the commencement ceremony.
Audra is a double major in social work and Catholic studies. She is passionate about helping youth and families in crisis, following the principles of Catholic social teaching. Her impressive experience includes internships with the Police Youth Bureau and Juvenile Court. Additionally, she spent three summers at a clinic for young individuals with developmental and educational delays. Audra is also deeply involved in volunteering, advocating for people on the margins, and promoting pro-life initiatives. Her impactful testimony in front of the North Dakota Legislature led to the inclusion of a nursery in the new women’s prison.
At the university, she has taken part in the Emerging Leaders Academy, the Dawson Society, and the String Ensemble, among other activities. After graduation, Audra plans to work as a social worker and pursue further studies in her field.
“Audra is a student who leads through integrity and purpose,” said Katie Krukenberg, an associate professor and Social Work Program director at the University of Mary. “She has fused her faith with her professional training, including studies at the university’s Rome campus, which enriched her understanding of her vocation.”
Michael Mortenson, the director of Alumni Relations, shared, “Choosing the Outstanding Senior is both rewarding and tough due to the high number of qualified nominees. Audra stood out for her commitment to faith, academic excellence, and servant leadership. Her work with vulnerable populations and advocacy at the state level exemplifies the essence of a University of Mary education.”

Recent statistics from the National Youth Advocacy Coalition indicate that around 18% of youth report feeling disenfranchised or disconnected from their communities. Individuals like Audra, who are committed to service and advocacy, play a crucial role in bridging these gaps and fostering resilience among young people.
