University Hawks Dominate in Holiday Classic
Joe Schmidle, the University Hawks’ coach, believes in versatile offensive strategies. In their recent game against Shady Spring at the Hope Gas Holiday Classic, the Hawks displayed just that.
After trailing by three points at the end of the first quarter, the Hawks rallied by hitting 11 of 15 shots in the second quarter, ending the game with an impressive 61% shooting rate. They secured an 82-57 win, improving their record to 4-0.
Schmidle said, “This team has eight or nine players who are really good. It’s about finding the right five on any given day.” He praised their teamwork, noting how well they shared the ball throughout the game.
Shady Spring started strong, shooting 8 of 11 in the first quarter to lead 22-19. But after consecutive three-pointers from Glenn Brown and Kyle Weaver, the Hawks didn’t look back. A pivotal moment occurred when the Hawks went on a 15-point run, dominating the game. Brown scored six points during that stretch, showcasing their offensive depth.

Although the Tigers fought back, closing the gap to 62-49 heading into the final quarter, the Hawks responded swiftly to quash any hopes of a comeback. Schmidle noted, “We still have things to work on. We’re missing some assignments, but we’re getting better.”
Brown led the Hawks with 24 points, shooting 10 of 16 from the field. Karpinski added 14 points, mostly from the free-throw line. As a team, the Hawks recorded 23 assists, reflecting their unselfish play.
In contrast, Dillon led Shady Spring with 23 points. Despite their loss, the game underscored the importance of teamwork and resilience in basketball.
