University Girls Flag Football Team Sets Ambitious Goals as They Gear Up for Season Opener!

University High School’s girls flag football team is gearing up for the 2025 season, under the guidance of Coach Jeff Marchiorlatti. The Trojans will kick off their season with a home game against San Clemente on August 13 at 5 p.m.

Coach Marchiorlatti is optimistic. The team is strong, losing only two seniors from last year’s squad that placed third in the Pacific Coast League (PCL). After facing injuries that knocked them out of the CIF playoffs against Trabuco Hills, the players are now healthy and ready to aim for both PCL and CIF championships.

Senior captains Carson Cruz and Elyse Mills lead the team. Cruz, returning as quarterback for a third year, brings crucial experience. She recently won a CIF championship in softball and has committed to play at the next level. Mills, recognized for her versatility and earning first team All-PCL honors, is a standout in both football and softball.

Junior Arden Marchiorlatti, a first team All-CIF and All-PCL player, is critical on both sides of the ball. She led the PCL in interceptions and ranks among the top players in CIF and nationally for receiving yards.

The Trojans enjoyed a victorious off-season, claiming the 4Vert Tournament championship in the spring. “We aim to build on that momentum as our season begins,” said Marchiorlatti.

This season will also feature special events like the OC Labor Day Classic on August 30 and September 1 and a community night on September 17. Notably, this is the second year girls flag football will have CIF sanctioned playoffs, elevating the competition and excitement for players and fans alike.

Flag football is gaining momentum in schools across the country. In a recent survey, 74% of students expressed interest in participating in school sports like flag football, showcasing its growing popularity. As the sport has evolved, some schools have even started offering scholarships for players, further enhancing its appeal.
