On February 7, the University of Alabama System board of trustees gave the green light for several new projects at the Tuscaloosa campus.
These include building a new student service center, a training facility, and more pickleball courts.
Student Well-Being Hub
The board also approved plans for a new Student Well-Being Hub. This facility will cover 82,500 square feet and cost $59.9 million. It’s set to be built on the Bryce campus.
Inside, students will find various services like counseling and wellness programs. Construction is expected to start in April.
ROTC and Veterans Center
The board also OK’d plans for a 19,746-square-foot ROTC facility and veterans center. It will be designed by Seay, Seay, & Litchfield Architects and will cost $12.7 million.
This center will focus on wellness for military and veteran students and will feature a rappelling tower and an obstacle course.
Admissions Renovations
Undergraduate admissions is moving to a new space at the Student Services Center. The second floor will be renovated to fit admissions and scholarships teams.
According to UA president Stuart Bell, this will make it easier for students to meet with financial aid and recruitment staff.
Chambless King Architects will handle the $1.3 million renovations.
Student Recreation Expansion
Due to growing interest, the board approved up to 10 new pickleball courts at the Parker-Haun Tennis facility.
This $1.6 million addition will help accommodate more players.
Steven Hood, the vice president of student life, mentioned that these courts attract a wide range of students, promoting fitness and a lively campus atmosphere.
The board also approved several construction projects for the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
