Eric Rud Appointed Head Coach of UAA Seawolf Hockey
The University of Alaska Anchorage has welcomed Eric Rud as the new head coach of Seawolf Hockey. Rud, an experienced coach with over 25 years in collegiate, junior, and international hockey, is the eighth head coach in the program’s history.
Rud has a solid background in Division I hockey and a great track record in recruiting. Acting athletic director, Tanya Pont, expressed excitement about Rud’s appointment. “UAA hockey has a rich history, and we believe Coach Rud is the right fit to lead us into the future,” she said.
Before joining UAA, Rud was an assistant coach at St. Cloud State for two seasons. He also held positions as the associate head coach at Miami (Ohio) and as head coach of St. Cloud State’s women’s team. His connections in junior hockey have been strong, including coaching the Sioux Falls Stampede and the Green Bay Gamblers.
Rud has significant experience with USA Hockey, coaching teams that won medals at international competitions, like the gold medal at the 2022 World Junior Challenge. He’s known for developing talent, helping numerous players achieve honors such as the Hobey Baker Award and All-American status. More than 60 student-athletes have gained all-academic honors under his guidance.
“I’m honored to be chosen as the next head coach,” Rud said. He emphasized a commitment to building a team known for discipline and competitiveness. He aims to cultivate a culture that respects the past while preparing for a successful future.
Rud, a former defenseman at Colorado College, earned a degree in psychology. He played professional hockey from 1997 to 2002, gaining coaching experience along the way.
As Rud steps into this new role, he’s excited to work with the current team and inspire future Seawolves.
In recent years, collegiate hockey has seen a rise in competitive programs, making coaching hires like Rud essential for success. A report from the NCAA indicates a steady increase in hockey participation, with over 60,000 student-athletes in 2022—showing that the passion for the sport only continues to grow. As Rud leads UAA, his focus on developing both players and a strong community presence will be vital as the program moves forward.
