University of Arizona Celebrates NAVFAC Southwest Commanding Officer: A Tribute to Leadership and Service

Capt. Cathy Eyrich recently celebrated the next wave of students as the guest speaker at the University of Arizona Alumni Chapter of San Diego’s Summer Sendoff event. Nearly 100 attendees gathered for this special occasion, which welcomed eight new scholarship recipients into the Wildcat family.

During her speech, Eyrich emphasized the transformative journey that lies ahead for these students. “It is such an honor to represent University of Arizona alumni and welcome the next generation of Wildcats into the family,” she shared. Eyrich’s commitment to public service was highlighted when she received the University of Arizona Distinguished Citizen Award. This honor acknowledges those who make significant contributions through volunteer work and public service.

Eyrich’s own journey began at the University of Arizona, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering in 2000 and a Master of Science in environmental science in 2008. Today, she serves as the commanding officer of Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command (NAVFAC) Southwest, overseeing essential services across 19 military bases in six states and managing over 3,500 professionals.

Her extensive experience includes commanding Naval Support Facility Thurmont, home to Camp David, and serving as head detailer for the Civil Engineer Corps. Eyrich’s leadership and expertise play a vital role in military operations, and her commitment to education is evident in her willingness to guide new students.

Research shows that mentorship can significantly enhance academic success. A 2021 study found that students with mentors are more likely to graduate and pursue advanced degrees. As Eyrich engages with these new Wildcats, her insights can inspire and influence their paths.

Cathy Eyrich’s dedication reflects a growing trend among successful professionals who take time to nurture the next generation. As they share their experiences, they foster a culture of support, resilience, and ambition among young students.

Her story serves as a powerful reminder that education and strong mentorship can lead to extraordinary accomplishments. The future looks bright for the new Wildcats under her guidance.
