Head Coach Roger Totten, a five-time Coach of the Year, expressed his pride in the team’s hard work. “This championship spotlights the skill and dedication of our players,” he said. “Winning this title brings visibility to our program and our university.”

To claim the championship, the Golden Lions faced tough competition from Prairie View A&M and North Carolina A&T. They finished with a three-day total of +23 over par, totaling 882 strokes.

Four players from UAPB finished in the top 10:

  • Jose Berenguel (So.) took home the individual medalist title, finishing the tournament at 7-under-par with scores of 71, 64, and 74, totaling 209.
  • Jules De Reu (So.) secured 4th place with a score of +7 (72, 69, 82 = 223).
  • Juan Melida (Fr.) came in 5th at +9 (73, 74, 78 = 225).
  • Timur Alalin (So.) rounded out the top 10, finishing at +14 (75, 73, 82 = 230).
  • Jonathan Baumann (Fr.) also contributed, finishing 28th at +22 (76, 79, 83 = 238).

This achievement highlights the rising talent in HBCU golf, an area that’s gaining more attention in recent years. According to a report by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), participation in college golf has steadily increased among minority students, reflecting a growing interest and investment in the sport.

Coach Totten acknowledged the support from the university and the community, stating, “This win belongs to all of us.” His remark speaks volumes about the unity and encouragement that fosters such success.

As the sport evolves, teams like UAPB continue to break barriers and inspire the next generation of golfers. Their journey demonstrates that with dedication and community support, significant milestones are achievable.
