CLEVELAND — The University of Chicago volleyball team had an exciting Sunday, winning both matches in the second UAA Round Robin of the season. They first defeated #6 Emory 3-1 and then topped Brandeis 3-0.
In the opening match against Emory, the Maroons faced a tough challenge. Initially trailing 9-8, they bounced back to take a commanding 18-12 lead. Despite some close calls, they secured the first set 25-23, aided by errors from the Eagles.
The second set was a battle. UChicago again raced to an 18-12 lead, but the Eagles fought back, winning 10 of the next 12 points to even the match. However, the Maroons regrouped in the third set. With the score 21-20 in favor of Emory, Diya Mishra stepped up, scoring four crucial kills to clinch the set 25-23 and give UChicago a 2-1 lead.
The fourth set saw UChicago establish another strong lead. They had several chances to close it out, and after a bit of tension, Adelee Kaiton sealed the victory with a powerful kill. Gabi Spellings was a standout performer at the net, notching nine total blocks—her best showing since Diya Mishra’s performance against UW-Oshkosh in 2022.
In their second match against Brandeis, UChicago surged ahead to a 10-3 lead. Even when the Judges fought back, taking a 20-18 lead, the Maroons held their nerve. They saved three set points before Mishra and Spellings struck again, winning the first set 26-24.
UChicago maintained the momentum, building significant leads in the next two sets and finished strong to complete their sweep.
Diya Mishra led the team with 29 kills across both matches, while Adelee Kaiton impressed with 22 digs. Ellie Maxwell contributed 39 assists, and Gabi Spellings added 12 blocks.
With this doubleheader sweep, the Maroons improved their record to 9-9 overall and currently lead the UAA standings at 4-1. They’ll be back in action on October 18, hosting Denison and North Park for the first of two UChicago Triangulars.
