University of Cincinnati Football Fans Face Outrage Over Disturbing Discriminatory Chants During BYU Game

University of Cincinnati football fans faced backlash this past weekend for chanting a derogatory phrase aimed at members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints during a game against BYU. As the Bearcats played the Cougars and ultimately lost 26-14, fans repeatedly yelled, “F*** the Mormons!”

The chant was so disruptive that the stadium’s public announcer asked attendees to stop. Unfortunately, the pleas went largely ignored.

Chants like this have a history at BYU sporting events. Teams such as USC, Oregon, Providence College, and Arizona have all faced backlash for similar derogatory chants in recent years. Just last month, the University of Colorado was fined $50,000 for similar behavior.

The Cincinnati Athletic Department has not yet publicly commented on the incident. BYU, established in 1875, is a key institution for members of its faith.

In a surprising turn, a fan account associated with Barstool Sports issued an apology to BYU supporters, stating that the behavior was inexcusable and did not represent the university or the city of Cincinnati. They thanked the BYU fans for their kindness during the game, and many Cougars fans responded positively, appreciating the heartfelt message.

Some social media users, however, felt that repeated apologies are becoming meaningless. Comments ranged from expressions of disappointment over recurring discrimination to acknowledgment of the emotional toll such chants can take on individuals.

On the field, BYU’s performance is noteworthy. They kept their hopes of clinching the Big 12 title alive, thanks in part to a remarkable 222 rushing yards from player LJ Martin. BYU coach Kalani Sitake expressed pride in his team’s ability to control the game and secure the win.

As Cincinnati prepares for their next game against TCU, the contrast between on-field success and off-field issues continues to be a topic of discussion, both among fans and analysts. Addressing the behavior of fans will be essential for maintaining a respectful and inclusive atmosphere at sporting events.
