HONOLULU — The University of Hawai’i women’s water polo team is set for the 2026 season. Coach James Robinson has brought on Brooke Maxson as the new assistant coach.
Maxson comes to UH after a successful run at UCLA. There, she helped lead the Bruins to a national championship in 2024. Robinson praised her, saying, “Brooke brings a wealth of experience. Her impact on teams is evident, and I know she’ll be a great fit for us.”
Joining Robinson and associate coach Candice Vorbeck, Maxson will help guide the Rainbow Wahine, who had a remarkable 22-5 record this past season. They swept the Big West titles and reached the national semifinals during Robinson’s first year as head coach.
Maxson expressed her enthusiasm, stating, “I’m grateful for this opportunity and excited to work with such talented athletes.”
Originally from Santa Ana, California, Maxson had an impressive playing career at UCLA from 2017 to 2021. She was recognized as an All-American three times and contributed to the Bruins reaching the 2021 championship game. In her college career, she played 98 games and scored 46 goals while also making a significant defensive impact with 30 steals and 27 field blocks.
Her coaching journey began in 2021 at Golden West College, where she worked with women’s water polo and swimming. After a year in Madrid teaching English, she returned to UCLA and enjoyed another successful season, helping the team to an impressive 46-6 record.
This news comes as water polo continues to grow in popularity across collegiate sports. According to a recent NCAA report, water polo participation has risen by over 15% in the last five years, reflecting the increased interest among athletes and fans alike. With coaches like Robinson and now Maxson, programs are investing in talented individuals who can inspire and lead future generations.
